Gwinnett's emergency dispatches enter digital age Thu, 20 Nov 2008 18:10:21 EST The recent switchover to a digitally encrypted emergency dispatch system in Gwinnett County has drawn a veil of secrecy around police communications even as it has made transmissions clearer and more secure. The $35 million Motorola P25 digital 911 system was paid for by the voter-approved penny sales tax. Static and interference typical on the old analog system have been virtually eliminated since the switchover Monday, said Angie Conley, the Gwinnett 911 center's communications manager.
Closed crematory sues Snellville to get back in business Thu, 20 Nov 2008 16:15:30 EST A controversial crematory in Snellville, ordered to shut down in October after its operating licenses were revoked, is fighting back. The attorney for Chris Nuzum, owner of Cremation Society of the South, has filed a lawsuit against the city of Snellville, its planning department director and its appeals board, directing the city to reissue certificates of occupancy "to avoid further injustice." The appeals board ruled Oct. 14 that the building plan submitted by the crematory in 2006 differed substantially from the actual operation that opened Sept. 2, including the installation of a smokestack.
Georgia's hopes fading for reversing water ruling Thu, 20 Nov 2008 15:50:47 EST Georgia is running into more resistance in its bid to convince the Supreme Court to overturn a critical ruling that undermined the state's water rights. The Justice Department recently recommended that the high court not take up the case, maintaining in a brief filed last week that Georgia's arguments are flawed and that the issue is not significant enough to merit Supreme Court attention. Georgia asked the Supreme Court in August to overturn a lower court decision that invalidated an agreement between Georgia and the Army Corps of Engineers for water withdrawals from Lake Lanier, a massive federal reservoir that provides most of Atlanta's water.
Duluth wrestles with developing old City Hall Thu, 20 Nov 2008 13:21:32 EST Duluth already has decided on the fate of the old City Hall and adjacent museum. What's next to decide is how to redevelop the downtown block while preserving the area's historic sensibility. That was a big question Wednesday night as about 50 residents turned out to offer input on plans for a multi million-dollar mixed-used development at the old City Hall block. Mayor Nancy Harris, who moderated the public hearing in Duluth's new City Hall, said given that the property "is the core piece of the downtown area," the key issue is what the development will "look like, be like and feel like."

Illana Spellman. Each was charged with armed robbery, while Terzian was also charged with aggravated assault and Huck was also charged with loitering and prowling, according to the jail's Web site.
Counties debate, decide to take $81M in foreclosure aid Thu, 20 Nov 2008 10:56:06 EST Georgia's largest local governments have all agreed to ask for federal money to create governmental house-flipping programs in hopes of propping up values in neighborhoods beset by foreclosures. In all, Atlanta and Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Clayton and Cobb counties stand to get about $81 million in federal aid through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. There's a total of $153 million headed to Georgia. The program is part of the federal government's ongoing efforts to resolve the economic and foreclosure crisis. It allows local governments to buy problem foreclosures, fix them up and then sell or rent the properties to some of the same folks who have lost their homes during the crisis. They can also use it to create special financing to make the properties affordable.
Residents awakened by Molotov cocktail in home Thu, 20 Nov 2008 08:27:37 EST Two Snellville residents had a rude awakening Wednesday when someone tossed a Molotov cocktail through a ground floor window into their living room. Two people happened to be sleeping in the living room that night when the explosive device came sailing through the window shortly before 5 a.m., igniting a nearby chair, said Gwinnett fire Capt. Thomas Rutledge. The pair jolted awake and quickly removed the burning chair from the house, Rutledge said. The fire caused minimal damage to the carpet and wall of the living room.
SWAT team nabs fugitive wanted in shooting Thu, 20 Nov 2008 08:09:17 EST Gwinnett deputies on Wednesday arrested a fugitive wanted in connection with a shooting in DeKalb County. Deputies received information Wednesday morning from DeKalb County's fugitive unit that Bertram Alton Gordon was holed up at a residence near Norcross with several firearms. He had also made threats that he was not going back to jail, according to Gwinnett County Sheriff's spokeswoman Stacey Bourbonnais. A SWAT team was preparing to force entry into the house, on the 6000 block of Rotondo Place, when Gordon opened the door and got down on the ground. Gordon was arrested without a fight and released to the custody of DeKalb County, where he faces an aggravated assault charge. — Andria Simmons
